UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

Since it has been quite a long time since we have been active, we are going to be Under Construction for a while - trying new fonts, designs, and updating our sidebar stuff. Hopefully we will get it how we like it soon so it won't change too much!

Also - Can someone tell me how to get rid of the giant gap below this notice - I cannot figure out how to do it - thanks!!

Names?

So I have been thinking about names lately, and wondering how all my animal friends out there got theirs - I mean, I am sure your moms and dads picked them, but what made them choose them? I was going to post this for a while, then Khyra at Khyra's Khorner wrote about her name, and I decided it was a sign to post it! I already have a name picked out for the next pet I get that is a girl - I like Trixie. Which is funny, because Lola was named Trixie when I got her. But I knew even before I met her that I wanted a girl kitty named Lola, so that is what she got. Same with Floyd, but Floyd would be Floyd even if he had been a girl. I just thought that was a good name - when he was little and would tolerate a collar, he had a pink one (get it - Pink Floyd). Kirzon was tough - it is from a TV show (Star Trek Deep Space 9 and yes is is misspelled). I knew I was getting him but didn't have a name picked out so my friend and I just started randomly picking things we saw as we were driving - Arby - no, McDonald - no, etc. So then we started on TV shows, and ended up with Kirzon. Lola was actually originally going to be Lolita, with Lola just as a nickname, but that lasted about a minute before it was just easier to stick with Lola. Virgil was decided easily - I had come up with it out of nowhere for a stuffed animal I got for the daughter of someone I used to be friends with. I think I had just read Dante's Inferno recently which is why it was in my mind. So years later, I immediately went to that name again. I think it is a good choice. And Barney, well, I knew I wanted another kitten for Virgil to play with (since the other 3 are older) and knew what girls name I would want (Trixie) but didn't know a boys. Since Barney is very obviously a boy (you may know why I say that if you look close at some of his pictures) I had no name. So I drove home after first meeting him, and once I had decided for sure I was going to take him - about a block from the vets office - I started to try and think of a name. I went through a bunch and there were some I liked but there are already cats with names I thought up. So I started going through TV shows I liked - luckily I went by night of the week and found one really quickly. I picked Barney from How I Met Your Mother, which is one of my favorite shows (I even watch videos of it at work during lunch). It is on Monday and I didn't need to go any further! I am prepared for next time though - I was thinking that I could use people in my family (who aren't with us any more) and so I have some good boys names for the future - Melville (I had thought about Melvin for Barney but there is a Melvin out there and he is a baby too so that would be too confusing) which was my grandpa's name, or Julius, who was my great grandfather. We have a ton of interesting names in our family (ie. Oceanius - and she was a girl!) and my dad wrote some books on our geneology, so I have a great list to choose from!

So, for all my blogging animal friends out there - how did your moms and dads pick your names? Post your responses in the comments - I look forward to reading them!

Ok here we go...

Mom had a Chopper and a Harley (both dogs) and when she got us, she said she had to have a SCOOTER. Then she saw me and wanted us to be kinda twinsie so I got to become SKEETER (I'm Scooter,s sister). KING was the only boy in his litter and PANDORA, well she was just a bad little kittygirl. (King and Pandora are siblings too). So, there ya have it!

Wizad's name just popped into my head. He was so soft, loving, cuddling creature I had met in years. He started working his magic on us at first sight. He was a true Wizard in a fur coat. Angel we tried many different namds but she ignored every one, except Angel. She would turn and looks at us and after several times she would meow. People think I am funny cause I say my pets pick their own names. Kirby came with his name. His foster Mom had named and it just fit him, and still does.

Charlie was named Charlie after the cat who featured in the many public saftey advertisments that were shown during our childhood.

Lola was named because of a children's programme called Charlie and Lola about a brother and sister. If Lola had been a boy She would have been Henry after Henry's cat.

Thomas because he's a tom cat, imaginative I know!

Very cool! Oh, my story is long and involves my brother (who crossed the bridge), but I will summarize =)
Mom won my brother as a gift, she thought of various names, she wanted a mythical name, but she thought "Orion", and think very nice. But unfortunately my brother left us =(
So I was a great gift for my mother! I came to let the joy! Actually she always wanted a female kitten, and she always wanted to be called "Luli" (she has this dream since childhood), but I came with the name registered with pedgree as "Jasmim". My mother think a beautiful name, and decided not to change. She thinks in the future, if have another cat, to put the name Luli =)

Smokey was named on the car ride home. He has grey and white strips, and so I thought he had all the colors of smoke, so he became Smokey. Now he's solid black, but he knows his name. He also knows he is called Goose.

Devon came with his name, but it suits him.

I already had the name Tanner picked out and was going to use it on my next foster kitten, and well, I lucked out that it was a little tan kitten.

Mojo had his name when I adopted him.

My next cat, if I can afford a Sphynx cat is going to be named Mr. Pickles!

Very cool idea you have, there!
My Domino already came with her name and is suited her so well, I kept it.
When I was waiting for Dante to be old enough to come home, they showed a dog named "Dante" on the Today Show, and immediately I knew I loved that name.
Since I already had two cats with "D" names, when we adopted Dylan, that was another name with "D" that I really liked. And now they are the 3-Ds!

Okay, this may sound goofy...but I'm named after my mom's dad...his name was Walter and his friends called him Wally...mom didn't want to name me Walter so I became Wally.

Ernie is named after Ernest Hemmingway cuz he had lots of polydactyl cats and Ernie is a poly...once again, mom didn't want to name him Ernest, so he became Ernie.

Zoey...well, we needed a name with an E sound on the end, and mom googled girl cat names and decided she like Zoey...Zoey almost was Phoebe, but dad didn't like that name....

Milo and Alfie said...

Wow! What a thought provolong post. We'll have a go! We asked Mm ablout all the cats she's ever had ~ 'cos there aren't that many.

Her first ever cat (who looked like our Alfie) was from a chinese restaurant. There cat had kittens and they were getting rid of them so Mom chose one (a beautiful grey)and called him Confuscious (as in Chinese).

After he died she had two (black panther) cats, a brother and sister. At the time she was dating a racing driver so she called them Merak and Khamsin (The Maserati Khamsin was named after the Khamsin, a hot, violent wind in the Egyptian desert ~ it was a sports car introduced as a Bertone prototype in 1972)( Also in 1972, Maserati introduced what could be considered a Bora 'Junior': the Merak, not named after a wind this time but after a star from the constellation 'Ursa Major')

The next cat Mom had was a Lilac Point Siamese and she named him Henry (although he had a posh pedigree name too). At the time she was dating a university lecturere and he used to call Mom "Eliza Dolittle" to tease her (as Mom has an upperclass English accent) ~ and Mom used to call him Henry Higgins to tease him right back! He gave Mom the kitten as a birthday present.(Pygmalion, 1913, is a play by George Bernard Shaw loosely inspired by the Greek myth of the same name. It tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can successfully pass off a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, as a refined society lady by teaching her how to speak with an upper class accent and training her in etiquette. In the process, Higgins and Eliza grow close).

4 years after Henry died Mom had us (in 2008), And she named me, Milo after the children's television character on CBeebies - Tweenies - Tweenie Time - Milo ~ as her little grandson used to love him.

Then later in 2008 Mom gotchad Alfie too.She saw him at a homeless cat shelter and he was little, poorly, weak and she said to him "what's it all about?" ~ meaning why is life treating yoo this way. Then she made arrangements to adopt him and care for him forever. She said she just hadta name him Alfie after the song bu Burt Bacharach:

Whats it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
Whats it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
Then I guess its wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
What will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe theres a heaven above, Alfie,
I know theres something much more,
Something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed youre nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And youll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie.

Well the nice ladies that rescued us at Kitten Action Team (KAT) named me Brian and named Zoe. Sister Sascha was named Smokey, but Mom and Dad named her Grace because she is amazing. Sister Sascha was totally abandoned and Mom and Dad appeared on the scene about the time KAT discovered her at PetSmart, she looked like a Princess and Sascha seemed logical. Cool topic, but I still don't know how they came up with Brian, but I like it, it fits me.

Well, since there are 6 of us, this make take a while.... we will keep it short!

Maya- Maya was only a few weeks old when he was found so his gender was unknown. I named him Maya after a cartoon, Maya The Bee. When we found out he was a boy, it was too late, Maya stuck!

Chevelle- She is all black and had two black raising stripes down her back, you could hardly see them. She was named after my husband's 1969 Chevelle SS.

Maizy Grace- I believe her name evolved from Amazing Grace.

Ferris- Named after Ferris Bueller, one of our favorite movies.

Rambler- He was a neighborhood stray that would pass through our yard from time to time. We trapped him when we heard Animal Control was after him. Since he was a wanderer we named him Rambler.

Maggie May- My husband (mechanic) was test driving a car for a lady and heard a kitten under the hood, so he pulled over and there was Maggie May hunkered down on the battery under the hood! We named her Maggie after the lady who owned the car she was in. The May part came from the Rod Stewart song, Maggie May.

Wow, what an interesting post!! I'll have to go back through when I have more time and read all the comments. For now: Jelly Bean was already named at the shelter where we adopted her and it was a cute name so we kept it. Jane was named after my favorite fictional character, Miss Jane Marple. Alice was so named because when I brought her home jane HATED her and it was BANG! ZOOM! To the MOON Alice!! like in the old Honeymooners TV show.

Inigo is from Princess Bride - daddy thought I am SO very brave and smart that it was a good name for me. It also means 'Fire-y' and since I'm a red mitted ragdoll it seemed appropriate.

I kept getting called Flufflebum so it stuck as a last name
~Inigo~

Daddy picked my name before we even met! He loved the name d'Artangan (and lucky for me so did I).

I have the BIGGEST PURR EVER and so I got my last name, Rumblepurr.

*RUMBLEPURR*

Madi's name....Ahhh it took me longer to name her than it did my daughter! HA
Madi's full name is Madison...(she was a diva from day one). I originally wanted to name her Clancy (after the first vet we had), hubby thought it wasn't feminine enough.
then of course I thought of Gray (she is gray and white) and Gracie but all of a sudden Madisom popped in my head. Loved reading your name story.Madi and Mom

Hi, my name is Kiefer. Everyone asked my non-fur mom how the heck I got my name. It's kind of funny. Mom is half Irish and she wanted an Irish name. When she got me, she thought I was so handsome. So she searched on the Web for an Irish name that meant handsome. Only two names were displayed. Kenneth and Kiefer. Well, my grandpa's name is Kenneth. My Mom did not think Papa would appreciate it if I was called Kenny. So Kiefer is was. I don't understand why Papa would not appreciate it if Mom called me his name? Mom says it's because his dad's name was Kenneth too, and the bank kept depositing money to the wrong accounts.

Kiefer

I didn't answer yet, so I will now!

Pimp (@PimpTheCat) got his name because when I first got him, I was in college and there were 4 girls living in our apartment. Being the only guy around... clearly he was a Pimp! :)

And his personality immediately matched his name. He's such a ladies man.

Melvin got his name basically as an inside joke between the boyfriend and I. Every time I would want to name my sim pet or something I'd ask my boyfriend and he would always say "Melvin".
Basically Melvin would have been named Melvin whether he was a girl or a guy. Good thing the Melvin we got fit the name perfectly.

I hope it's not too late to play...

My momma Ellie and I got our names because mom couldn't decide so she had her co-workers help. They came up with Eleanor Roosevelt and Corretta Scott King, 2 great women in history because we were 2 great cats...so Ellie and Cory stuck.

Jonesie- started with Joanie after Joanie Weston Roller Derby star of the 60's...turned into Jonesie just because.

Ginger- because she responded to my mom talking about Gingersnap cookies

Bennette- named after our dear sweet Benjamin

Grete- because her name was Gracie and we already had a Gracie wonderdog so we changed it so it was close but not Gracie

Cecilia- because she was a bed hog and she is long and lean and she just looks like a delicate Cecilia

Madison- no real reason, just because we were using M names at the time

Nigel- because we liked the name and we narrowed it down to either Sebastian or Nigel and we had the CB kitties vote

I think that's all our current kitties!
